Our MissionIt is the mission of Sacred Heart School to provide each child with a Christ-centered, comprehensive, and challenging education that nurtures self-esteem and a love of learning. The heart of our Mission is the integration of the scholastic, religious, and human experiences that are needed for continued growth, success in high school and college, and a life of integrity and principles. As believers in Gospel values, we reflect God's love upon each child and advance the entire learning process with the blessings of faith and the power of grace.

Our HistoryIf you follow a straight line from the Statue of Liberty up the western slope of the Hudson River to a corner in the heart of the Greenville section of Jersey City, you will find Sacred Heart School, right where it has stood for almost 100 years. Founded in response to the needs of immigrant families in the early part of the twentieth century, Sacred Heart School’s mission, then as now, emphasizes the education of the whole child – mind, heart and spirit.
Two world wars, a depression, immigration, migration and the ever-changing fortunes of large cities have challenged Sacred Heart over the years. Yet the school’s commitment to help families achieve a better life for their children through excellence in education, self-discipline, social responsibility and the message of God’s love is not only unchanged, it remains as relevant today as it was a century ago. Sacred Heart School stands alone as the only independent, faith-based elementary school in the eastern section of Jersey City from the Bayonne City line to Journal Square. It offers a true alternative to families seeking an oasis of peace, order and academic excellence. |
Our Philosophy
We believe that elementary education provides the most effective and positive impact upon a child only when all aspects of the developing child are acknowledged and nurtured: intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, and spiritual.
Therefore, we believe that a Catholic school has both the unique opportunity and the sacred responsibility to educate the whole child - mind, heart, and spirit.
First and foremost, we believe that it is the school's responsibility to create a safe, caring, and inspiring atmosphere for students that is conducive to the achievement of:
We believe that parents and family are the primary teachers and role models for their children, necessitating close cooperation and open communication between home and school.
We embrace and celebrate the image of God in all people and look upon the years that a child spends in elementary school as critical for the cultivation of love and respect for all people.
Sacred Heart believes that faith in God and the message of the Gospels call for an abiding belief in the potential of every student. The opportunity to attain individual excellence and a life of peace, productivity, creativity, and happiness must be presented during a child's formative years - within the walls of their elementary school.
